Conference calls
A conference call can be explain as a telephone call in which the calling party wishes to have more than one called party listen in to the audio portion of the call. The conference calls may be designed to allow the called party to participate during the call, or the call may be set up so that the called party merely listens into the call and cannot speak. It is often referred to as an ATC (Audio Tele-Conference).
Conference calls can be designed so that the calling party calls the other participants and adds them to the call. In most cases, the participants are able call into the conference call themselves. They do so either:
•by dialing into a "conference bridge" (a specialized type of equipment that connects telephone lines), or
•by using a special telephone number set up for that purpose.
Most companies use a specialized service provider who maintains the conference bridge, or who provides the phone numbers and PIN codes that participants dial to access the meeting or conference call.
Three-way calling is available ( at an extra cost) for most customers on their home or office phone line.
How to connect 3-Way Calls-
To three way call you call the first person you wish to talk to. Then you must press the flash button and dial the other person's phone number. While it is ringing press flash again. This will put your three people together. This option allows callers to add a second outgoing call to an already connected call
Business Application of Conference calls
Businesses use conference calls daily to meet with remote parties, both internally and outside of their company. Common applications are client meetings or sales presentations, project meetings and updates, regular team meetings, training classes and communication to employees who work in different locations. Conference calling is viewed as a primary means of cutting travel costs and allowing workers to be more productive by not having to go out-of-office for meetings.
Conference calls are used by nearly all United States public corporations to report their quarterly results. These calls usually allow for questions from stock analysts and are called earnings calls. A standard conference call begins with a disclaimer stating that anything said in the duration of the call may be a forward looking statement, and that results may vary significantly. The CEO, CFO, or Investor Relations officer then will read the company's quarterly report. Lastly, the call is opened for questions from analysts.
Conference calls are increasingly used in conjunction with web conferences, where presentations or documents are shared via the internet.
Conference calls are also beginning to cross over into the world of podcasting and social networking, which in turn fosters new kinds of interaction patterns. Live streaming or broadcasting of conference calls allows a larger audience access to the call without dialing in to a bridge. In addition, organizers of conference calls can publish a dial-in number alongside the audio stream, creating potential for audience members to dial in if and when they wish to interact.
Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
A typical analog telephone adapter for connecting an ordinary phone to a VoIP networkVoice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a protocol optimized for the transmission of voice through the Internet or other packet switched networks. VoIP is often used abstractly to refer to the actual transmission of voice (rather than the protocol implementing it). VoIP is also known as IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband. "VoIP" is pronounced voyp.
Companies providing VoIP service are commonly referred to as providers, and protocols which are used to carry voice signals over the IP network are commonly referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols. They may be viewed as commercial realizations of the experimental Network Voice Protocol (1973) invented for the ARPANET providers. Some cost savings are due to utilizing a single network to carry voice and data, especially where users have existing underutilized network capacity that can carry VoIP at no additional cost. VoIP to VoIP phone calls are sometimes free, while VoIP to public switched telephone networks, PSTN, may have a cost that is borne by the VoIP user.
Voice over IP protocols carry telephony signals as digital audio, typically reduced in data rate using speech data compression techniques, encapsulated in a data packet stream over IP.
There are two types of PSTN to VoIP services:
1) Direct Inward Dialing (DID) and access numbers.
2) DID will connect the caller directly to the VoIP user while access numbers require the caller to input the extension number of the VoIP user.
History-
Voice over Internet Protocol has been a subject of interest almost since the first computer network. By 1973, voice was being transmitted over the early Internet.[1] The technology for transmitting voice conversations over the internet has been available to end-users since at least the 1990's. In 1996, a shrink-wrapped software product called Vocaltec Internet Phone Release 4 provided VoIP, along with extra features such as voice mail and caller id. However, it did not offer a gateway to the analog POTS, so it was only possible to speak to other Vocaltec Internet Phone users.[2] In 1997, Level 3 began development of its first softswitch (a term they invented in 1998); softswitches were designed to replace a traditional hardware switchboards by serving as the gateway between two telephone networks
Security Mode
Many consumer VoIP solutions do not support encryption yet, although having a secure phone is much easier to implement with VoIP than traditional phone lines. As a result, it is relatively easy to eavesdrop on VoIP calls and even change their content.[9] There are several open source solutions that facilitate sniffing of VoIP conversations. A modicum of security is afforded due to patented audio codecs that are not easily available for open source applications, however such security through obscurity has not proven effective in the long run in other fields. Some vendors also use compression to make eavesdropping more difficult. However, real security requires encryption and cryptographic authentication which are not widely available at a consumer level. The existing secure standard SRTP and the new ZRTP protocol is available on Analog Telephone Adapters(ATAs) as well as various softphones. It is possible to use IPsec to secure P2P VoIP by using opportunistic encryption. Skype does not use SRTP, but uses encryption which is transparent to the Skype provider.
The Voice VPN solution provides secure voice for enterprise VoIP networks by applying IPSec encryption to the digitized voice stream.
Steps to Recover your wet Phone
Steps to recover your wet phone:
Remove the battery and take out the SIM card. It will save you some hassle. Furthermore SIM cards can withstand water reasonably well
Use a towel to remove as much water as possible. Do not connect the battery back to the phone
Dry your phone: You can do this by leaving it out in the sun, placing the phone on the heat vents of a PC monitor or TV. Do not use blow dryers to remove the moisture. Their heat can damage the circuit boards Leave the phone for drying for atleast 2 days (Yes two days!). While drying, do not try to put the battery back on to check whether it is working, or you might short out some of the electronics.
You can also use pure alcohol and spray or rinse it on the insides of the phone. Then leave the phone to dry out for 2 days.
If it still does not work properly the visit your local services centre. Remember water damage will usually void your product warranty.
Most mobile phones have a sticker which changes color once it’s wet. This is how mobile companies identify water-logged phones. If you can identify this sticker then place a tape on it to prevent it from changing colour.
Finally even if the service centre cannot help you, then do the inevitable. Buy a new phone. Relax, phones are getting outdated in 2 days anyway

LG turn to offer touch screen cell phone
Packing a wide 3-inch touch-sensitive display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, the LG LH2300 is targeting the Internet phone market that isn't quite crowded yet. The display is pitched as capable of displaying 26 million colors and is produced by Sharp.
The LH2300 uses a unique Hello UI that arranges all your contacts info in icons that you just drag-and-drop in order to use them. For example you can drag-and-drop icons of your favorite contacts to your mobile desktop and then when you type a message, you just drag and drop it on the icon. If you want to make a call, simply drag-and-drop the contact's icon to the call button on the bottom of the screen.
The LG LH2300 is further equipped with a 3 megapixel camera with auto focus, image stabilization, and face detection. There is also a DMB tuner to enjoy mobile TV on the go, Bluetooth 2.0 and a microSD card slot.
Although it looks rather large on the photos, the LG LH2300 measures 104 x 54.4 x 12.8 mm, which is actually the LG Viewty dimensions, but slimmer. The LH2300 is also lighter than the Viewty with its 95g as compared to 112 g.
The LG LH2300 will be available in Grape Wine and Navy Blue colors in April 2008 and will cost around 400 euro. Too bad it's Korea-only for now - if it turns out successful, we bet a GSM variant will be just around the corner.

Few Points On Mobile Phone and Health
The use of mobile phones and related technologies will continue to increase for the foreseeable future.
The balance of evidence to date does not suggest that emissions from mobile phones and base stations put the health of the UK population at risk.
There is now some preliminary scientific evidence that exposures to radiofrequency (RF) radiation may cause subtle effects on biological functions, including those of the brain. This does not necessarily mean that health is affected but it is not possible to say that exposure to RF radiation, even at levels below national guidelines, is totally without potential adverse health effects.
The Expert Group has recommended that a precautionary approach to the use of mobile phone technologies be adopted until more detailed and scientifically robust information becomes available.
For base station emissions, exposures of the general population will be to the whole body but normally at levels of intensity many times less than those from handsets.
Some people's well-being may be adversely affected by the environmental impact of mobile phone base stations sited next to houses, schools or other buildings, as well as by fear of perceived direct effects.
For all base stations, including those with masts under 15 m, permitted development rights should be revoked and the siting of all new base stations should be subject to the normal planning process.
The use of mobile phones whilst driving can have a detrimental effect on the quality of driving. Drivers should be discouraged from using mobile phones whilst on the move.
The widespread use of mobile phones by children for non-essential calls should be discouraged.

Type of Smart phone
Symbian can further be sub-divided into three categories
Symbian Series 60-
Symbian Series 80-
The disadvantage is that these phones are bulky and lack the “vibration” alert.
Windows Mobile -
Windows Mobile phones feature a distinctive Today screen, Pocket Word/Excel/PowerPoint to view and edit Office documents, Pocket Internet Explorer to browse the net, Good synchronization abilities with Outlook and Windows Media Player 10 Mobile to play multimedia files
This OS is feature packed and also has a large number of third party applications. The downside is that it is not as user-friendly as Symbian and requires some time to adjust to. The latest Windows OS is 5.0.
The two categories of Windows OS in the market are:
Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition
This OS is for phones that are not touch screen based.
Windows Mobile PocketPC Edition
This OS is for phones that are touch screen based.
Palm OS
Although not very popular in India, Palm OS is used in the well known Treo line of smartphones. Interestingly Palm OS has the largest number of software available for it. It is fairly intuitive and easy to use but the main factor weighing it down is the limited multitasking ability.
Smartphone
Smartphones are those phones which allow you to install programs to increase their functionality. It is just like a pocket computer. Again you can also install programs and games in traditional phones but these programs are limited to JAVA applications
Smartphones on the other hand can install programs in addition to JAVA applications. In fact a huge variety of third party software is available for most smartphones. In addition to this smartphones also allow viewing and editing of Office documents.
Smartphones can be made by putting phone functionality in a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) or by putting “smart” capabilities in a phone.

India welcomes Virgin mobile
Virgin Mobile's Indian service is targeting the 400 million Indians between the ages of 13 and 30 who, Branson says, the country's current telecom operators have been ignoring. Hence Virgin Mobile 's catchy tagline: Think hatke, Mumbai slang for "think out of the box." The company will be offering handsets by Nokia (NOK), Samsung, and Huawei Technologies, most of them black phones with red trim that will cost between $60 and $120 each. They have full-color screens and FM radio access—to listen to Fever 104, no doubt.
Virgin's team of 250 researchers spent nearly nine months studying their target audience. They discovered that Indian parents take away their children's cell phones at night and read the text messages they send or receive—something kids hate. Virgin's value-added service is offering a password-protected folder to the young so parents cannot read their messages. Great for the kids, too bad for the parents.

Opera Mini
Opera Mini's ongoing success is a proof of the mobile Web's adoption by mainstream consumers. Because Opera Mini targets feature phones that have traditionally possessed limited browsing capabilities, millions of people have made the personal choice to download and install Opera Mini to their phones. These consumers tend to use the mobile Web more frequently and actively than consumers with more static, less dynamic mobile Web browsers. Every month, Opera Mini users browse more than 1.7 billion pages, with much of that traffic generated through the search function in the browser.
